In the midst of this whole Pokemon Go craze, a young woman from Atlanta finds the time to show a downtrodden vet that there are still wonderful, caring people in this world.
In a heartwarming story she retells on Facebook, Kimberly Schintzius describes how she found what matters most, as she went out seeking a specific Pokemon on the streets of Atlanta.
She was on her way to get some dinner near Centennial Park when she ran into a gentleman she described as “frail looking” on a “worn out bicycle.”
Kimberly told him what Pokemon Go was all about and that she wasn’t actually lost as he had thought– but was just immersed in her game.
“He smiled and laughed and chatted with me about how he was wondering what all these young people walking around with their phones, doing funny things were doing,” Kimberly wrote.
Daniel Wise, a Vietnam vet, told Kimberly he’d really like something to eat and that “anything would be appreciated.” He didn’t want her to think the money would be spent on cigarettes or alcohol, so he agreed to stand outside the restaurant and wait for her.
Kimberly complied and bought him a hot meal. Afterwards, with tears in his eyes, Daniel asked if he could get a hug. The two took a picture together and as Kimberly started walking away after their goodbyes, Daniel said:
“… from the bottom of my heart I would like to thank you for your kindness you showed me today and letting me see that there are still young people like you out there who do selfless things like this in a world that often turns its back on old men like me and pretends we don’t exist.”
