When the members of the 212th Rescue Squadron (The Guardian Angels to Alaskans) left for Afghanistan to assist in Operations Resolute Support and Freedom’s Sentinel they took a special member with them. TOML, which is an acronym for the Guardian Angel’s motto, “That others may live,” is a trained PTSD service dog. Although the 212th Rescue Squadron were experienced with rescue operations, this deployment was TOML’s first time with the unit and he didn’t disappoint.
His trainer and founder of Midnight Sun Service Dogs, April Gettys told KTUU that, “It made all the difference in the world having him there. He didn’t just help our guys, he helped everybody that was on that base that needed help.”
