Navy veteran Michael Smith was only 20-years-old when he lost his legs after a helicopter blew up on deck of the USS Bellwood.
Michael told FOX10, “when I lost my leg, one of the first things that somebody told me is that I wouldn’t be able to do things.” Since his recovery Michael has been proving them wrong. Winning a slam dunk contest just months after his recovery then going on to compete in the US Open for Wheelchair Tennis.
Able bodied people often struggle to keeping up with him, especially with a serve at one hundred miles per hour and faster. Not to mention he can switch from his wheelchair to prosthetic legs.
When Michael isn’t training, he coaches others in wheelchairs, he has organized a tennis program for wheelchair veterans, and is working towards creating more wheelchair-friendly courts in the city of Phoenix.
