In 2011 when Chief Petty Officer Fabian Salazar and his battle buddy Max were both active duty, they were deployed to Afghanistan together to detect explosives. Their jobs caused them to separate as Max went on to another handler and CPO Salazar was sent to Guantanamo Bay. But it’s their time together in Afghanistan CPO Salazar won’t forget. He told Stephen Morgan with Fox 26 “If he hadn’t pulled me, I would have never looked back, and he (the enemy) would have a free shot at all eight of us who were pinned down,” Salazar said. “And because of that, on July 18, 2012, I was able to lift my head up and realize I’m going to get to go home, and it’s because of this guy.” Now three years later Max is back in his arms and CPO Salazar is thankful that he has the opportunity to return all the favors.
