“On January 31, 2011 I got in a bad car accident leaving me unable to walk (due to a serious break in my leg) or use my right arm. My brother, Daniel, was in Illinois going to Medic school and in the middle of being attached to a Marine platoon. My brother and I have always been very close, and it hurt him that he couldn’t be there with me through the hardest part of my life. We had nightly Skype sessions and countless phone calls, but nothing could repair the fact that he was not there when I needed it most.
On the night of February 12, 2011 he called me stating that he wanted to Skype. It was unusual because it was about 9:30 p.m. and due to my pushing therapies and countless medications, I would usually already be sleeping, but he insisted that it’d be worth it. So I waited ten minutes for him to log on, and when he didn’t, I called up a friend to keep me company as the time passed by. About ten minutes later, my nurse knocked on the door and said she needed to check for vitals. But I had no idea my brother was walking through the door to give me not only the best surprise I ever had, but the motivation I needed to learn to walk and get myself out of there just three days later!”
