After losing booth of his legs to an IED explosion seven years ago in Afghanistan, Marine Sergeant Joey Jones was determined to get up and walk. Spending six months learning to walk Sgt. Jones was mobile again but he developed a new mission.
As other injured service members made their way into the same hospital, Jones made it his duty to help them by mentoring them, their families and creating a peer group to help them recover.
Jones grabbed the attention of many, including Congress and the President, but it was Zac Brown -from the Zac Brown Band- who was so moved by Jones’ work that he reached out to have him be the spokesperson for his organization called Southern Ground.
Southern Ground is a group of handpicked artists that donate the proceeds from their art sales to fund Camp Southern Ground, which allows kids who’ve been affected by the war to transform their lives by experiencing the outdoors in an extraordinary way. Many of the kids have some form of Autism but the camp assists many other children, whether they’ve lost a parent or have been impacted by the last sixteen years of the Global War on Terrorism.
