In Rio Rancho, New Mexico on Saturday, a retired Marine backed his truck up in the middle of the highway, sure he saw an abandoned flag.
“It’s like a brother or sister and we just don’t leave anyone behind” said Jessie Hollars. “You wouldn’t want to leave anybody behind, so you got to go back and get her.”
Hollars’ fiancé was surprised when he stopped the truck in the highway, “I’m like, ‘This is not our exit,’ and he goes, ‘No, I’m going to get her,'” she said.
Jessica pulled out her phone and started to videotape the rescue. When he returned to the truck with the flag in his arms he noticed it was dirty, torn, and in need of care.
He was sure that he “saw red and white stripes on the ground. I just assumed it was a flag and went back for it”. Hollars said.
Now the flag is safe in his care and sits on the mantle, folded in his home. He has arranged to have a bunch of Marine buddies join him in giving the flag a proper ceremony by burning the now unusable flag, and burying the ashes.
