MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) – A New Year’s Eve surprise proposal was caught on camera when a Marine honored his girlfriend’s father during the special moment.
Corporal Matthew Auriel admitted, “Yeah, I was a little nervous,” while waiting for his girlfriend to show up at The Fire Museum to “show it off to her nephew” and where Auriel planned to propose in front of her father Lieutenant Trent Kirk’s, memorial at Our Fallen Heroes Foundation, developed to support families of the fallen, and provide a special place for visitation and connection.
“I mean, I knew it was gonna be special to her. I knew how much of a role model he [Trent] was to her and I just wanted to involve him,” Auriel said of fiancé Charity’s father; “Most people get nervous to ask a father for his blessing.”
This was a proposal like no other, as Lt. Trent Kirk was there in spirit, having been killed in a fire on Father’s Day, in 2003, in Memphis.
He “died a hero” after searching all night for victims of the fire, according to local news sources.
Including Charity’s dad was important to Auriel, who felt it was still, “the right thing to do, to ask a father for his daughter’s hand”.
This was a special moment for the young couple, sharing the shining moment with Lt. Kirk, and beginning the next phase of life together.
“I was completely surprised. I didn’t expect it at all,” Kirk said before answering “OMG, yes”, to Auriel.
“It’s this kind of moment that Our Fallen Heroes Foundation, created to help families of fallen heroes, was founded on” said a spokesperson for the foundation.
