The sight alone tugged at the heart. Army Reservist Chief Warrant Officer 4 Ivan Chavez surprised two of his children after he’d been deployed to Afghanistan for a year. The reunion took place at the Miami Beach City Hall where Chavez’s daughter, Jasmine, and son, Ivan, thought they were taking part in a recruitment promotion ceremony for Miami Beach firefighters only to be amazed when their hero walked in. Jasmine and Ivan will soon be serving their community as firefighters just like dad does when he isn’t away serving with the reserves. “Seeing them and everything they’ve gone through make, it’s that much more special. It’s been 11 months that I haven’t seen them,” Chavez said.
