A US Army Reservist has been reunited with a stray dog she befriended while she was deployed to Incirlik Airbase in Turkey.
A member of the 373rd Military Intelligence Battalion, Staff Sergeant Lynn Brotherson returned to Utah’s Salt Lake City just last week, but is celebrating a second homecoming of a different sort.
Brotherson’s second “welcome home” wasn’t for her, but for a stray dog named Ally, whom Brotherson befriended while at the airbase. Thanks to the International SPCA, Ally is one of 640 overseas dogs in the Operation Baghdad Pups” program, who send indigenous animals to live with the servicemembers they befriended.
“The shots, and the papers and all the paperwork that needs to be done to get her out of Turkey and back into the US, the international SPCA did it all for me,” Brothersen said.
Ally’s immigration journey began in Turkey before she was sent to Erbil, Iraq, where she caught a flight to New York before ending up in SSG Brotherson’s arms in Utah.
“This dog kind of, I don’t know, it’s a piece of home for her and brings her comfort, I can tell,” said Karen Brothersen, one of Brothersen’s daughters.
Ally was surrounded by Brotherson, her children and grandchildren on Monday afternoon, showered with more attention than any dog could ever ask for.
“She’s familiar and she was such a good morale dog, where she would just sit and snuggle with you for hours,” Brothersen told Fox13.
