Out of almost 100 sailors working on the front end of the USS Frank E. Evans, Del Francis was one of nearly 30 to survive when the ship collided with an Australian air carrier and the front half sank. 74 of his shipmates never made it home and their names never made it on the Vietnam Memorial Wall. In order to get his lost friends the proper acknowledgement they deserve, Francis decided to bike from Texas to Washington D.C. in what he calls the “Ride for Recognition”.
